Becky and I had lunch at the Dixie Kitchen in Evanston this weekend. I highly recommend it if you’re hunting down some good and spicy southern cooking. I had the southern sampler, which included gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans & rice. Becky had some sort of chicken sandwich, covered in some kind of cheese, some kind of spices, and some kind of bread.
I have a twisted psychological aversion to pancakes. I used to love them as a kid, but now I gag if I’m anywhere near them. The smell of maple syrup can actually trigger my gag reflex. Dixie Kitchen puts out these little fellers called Johnny Cakes while you wait for your food. They look just like silver dollar pancakes, and for all I know, they may be regular pancakes. But somehow, since they’re called Johnny Cakes, they can slip right past my deep rooted psychological defenses.
Johnny Cakes are mighty tasty!
I’ve been feeling blog-inadequate lately. Most other blogs I read do a nice job of adding images to every post, where my posts tend to be text-heavy.
So here’s a picture of Johnny Cakes:

Those don’t really look like the ones I ate at Dixie Kitchen. Those look kind of like latkes.
Here’s a picture of latkes:

There. Now I feel pretty cool.
